I wrote this page to exemplify the Power of starting small. The power of starting small. Our family purchased a home twenty years ago. We looked at many homes before we finally found a home that we liked. At the time, we were tired of looking, and I had a business meeting out of town.
My realtor and my family were waiting for me to return to continue our search. There were 7 homes scheduled for us to review. The first 6 did not quite make the cut, and the last home that we reviewed had everything that we had been looking for. We were so excited! One thing I noticed was that the home had two oak trees in the front yard. The trees at the time were fairly small oak trees.
As the years went by, the oak trees experienced tremendous growth. Twenty years later, these amazing oak trees are huge. And, they would drop what looks like millions of acorns all over the yard. This is a great testament to starting small in any great endeavor you begin. A strong foundation: faith, belief, and action.
As I look down and pick up one of the acorns, I think, “How could something so tiny become some so awesomely great? I thought, inside this tiny seed, there had to be a full blueprint for these massive oak trees. Oak Trees are one of the strongest, tallest, longest-living giants Mother Nature produces.
The Oak Tree doesn’t experience that incredible growth overnight. Like anything else, it starts small. this is also true for:
- our dreams,
- our aspirations,
- our goals,
- and all of our success stories.
As I looked at this little seed, I realized that it’s journey is an incredible reminder of the possibilities we have when we begin and move forward consistently and persistently with growth and intention. This principle is a requirement for all successful accomplishments.
Great Things Always Start as Something Small
Amazingly, inside an acorn is a complete baby oak tree, as well as all the nutrients that it needs to begin its journey. It looks ordinary; however, it is replete with potential, just like your dreams, your goals, and your future visions. Go here for some great options:
Growth begins quietly, beneath the surface, fighting through dirt, rocks, and other impediments, long before anyone observes any progress. Sounds kind of familiar when you are working to achieve your goals.
The First and Most Important Step Is the Foundation, Not Flash
When the acorn germinates, it grows down first, building the foundation. It sends a taproot deep into the soil, anchoring and stabilizing itself, and preparing for the weight of greatness ahead. Building the foundation for that amazing oak tree is so important. Same principle as building a business.
Your dreams require the same process to be successful:

- Strong Commitment,
- Work that no one else sees
Like the Oak Tree, you make progress when you build a strong foundation.
The Oak Tree’s Growth Is Slow Before It’s Spectacular Progress
In the early years the oak tree grows slowly as they benefit from the foundation being built by the acorn. The foundation provides the structure and the strength for the oak tree to grow. Later it grows exponentially upward, spreading the branches wide and tall.
This is how real success works:
- Slow progress doesn’t mean no progress
- Foundation creates momentum
- Strength built early becomes power later
- Your early steps to move forward matter more than you know.
Partnerships Make Your Growth Possible
Oak Trees cannot grow alone. They rely on sunlight, water, rich soil, and even fungi in the earth that help their roots absorb nutrients. Like Success in Business, everything works together to help the oak reach its full height.
Like the Oat Tree, you’re not meant to grow alone, either.
Your relationships, your mentors, community, resources, and your partnerships all support your rise.
Being part of the family and choosing the right environment makes all the difference for your success.
Small Seed, Great Growth, Enormous Legacy
In due time, the tiny acorn will become a towering tree—60, 80, even 100 feet tall. It can stand strong in the presence of storms.
Wonderfully, it will provide shade, shelter, and stability for many years. As well, it will produce thousands of acorns of its own, each with the same amazing potential for awesomeness.
Your goals and dreams can have that same kind of impact.
The work that you do can create a legacy for you.
Your growth will most likely influence many people you will never meet.
But it all starts with faith, belief, and action… one seed… and your decision to begin.
