Working With Computers, My passion didn’t begin with a technology background or any education in Computer Science. It began back in the 1990s when I started a new job as a Sales Representative with a company that sold business mailing equipment. I was assigned to a territory and had to attend a Training Program before I could market the products.
Working With Computers; How My Passion Started
After the training, I started my sales visits in my territory in a building occupied by many Business Offices. My work hours were 8 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday. I made presentations to just about every office in the building with no success, after 5 p.m., I knew it should have been the close of my workday. However, there was one office I had not visited. I said to myself, “I can’t leave this building without presenting to this last office. Thank goodness, I made an amazing sale of our business equipment to that business. I was so excited!
My Passion for Working With Computers; My role as a Salesman.
After making my first sale, even though it was after hours, I went back to our Business Office. Our Manager was still at the office, and he inquired about my first day in my territory. I let him know how the day went, including the following At the end of the day, after many rejections. He was very complimentary and asked to talk about my day at the next office meeting. I felt really good about what I was doing, and by being persistent, I could effectively assist my customers with their equipment needs.
Working With Computers, My Passion: A Very Unique Beginning
Our Manager had been prepping us for a new product that was computer-based and would be a unique and innovative addition to our Business Machine Line. We were all very excited to see what this new product was all about, and I was surprised by our Manager’s explanation of this computer-based product.
He began by saying that a CD, one component of the device, can store an unimaginably large amount of data. When I heard him say this, it changed my perspective, even though I knew nothing about computer CDs, data, or computers in general. This invention would cut our customers’ mailing costs in half, he remarked.
I thought to myself, you’ve got to be kidding me, I have a customer who has 7K in mailing expenses each month. This got my attention, and after the meeting I called my customer and asked him one question: How would you like to save half your mailing cost? His response, you are my salesman, you know my monthly cost. He mentioned that he would be interested in learning how to save half on his mailing cost. We then scheduled an appointment for the next day.
Product Presentation on Floppy Disk, Solution to my Struggle
I was so thankful that we were given a “Floppy Disk” with the sales presentations on it. It was in the early 1990s, and I had never touched a computer. I didn’t even know what a floppy disk was until someone explained to me that it had the presentation on it.
When I arrived at my customer’s office, we met, and I immediately mentioned to him that this was a new product and I was not computer literate, but I had a floppy disk with the presentation on it. He said, “Hand it here.” I have a computer on my desk. He took the floppy disk and inserted it into his computer, and reviewed the complete presentation. I was so relieved!
After his review, he said, “This looks good. I would like a demonstration.” I called our office and set up the demo, and as I was leaving his office, I noticed that he had many computers throughout his office on the floor. I asked, why do you have all of these computers on the floor? His response, “We just upgraded, we have all new computers in our office.” I asked, what are you going to do with these? He said, “Sell them.” I asked him, “Would you sell me one?” He said, Sure, give me 200 dollars. I wrote him a check. I was super excited! I thought, now I have my own computer!

The product demonstration at our Corp. Office went very well. My customer was amazed by the product demonstration and by the idea that he could save half of his mailing cost. He looked at me and said Del, bring the paperwork to my office this afternoon. I was one of the first salesman that sold this amazing system, even though I was not computer literate. This began my passion for working with computers.
Working With Computers, My Passion
The computer that I purchased from my customer was a 286 with a monochrome monitor, which by today’s standards would be considered a dinosaur. I was so excited that I had a computer in my house. I was fascinated beyond belief. I began to read every book I could find about computer technology.
The computer had a modem in it; however, I found it difficult to log into Blackboard. At that time, the Internet was not available as it is today, but there was the Blackboard. The old computer had a modem, but it did not work. I tried everything I could think of to make it work.
I read books from the library, and anywhere I could find a book on computers. I finally realized that it was broken. I saved and purchased a new one, and to my amazement, it worked. Of course, I did learn something when I read those books. My Knowledge about computers and computer technology increased significantly. I discovered something important: computers reward persistence. Eventually, I sold the old 286 for more than I paid for it.
Increasing My Knowledge and Experience
I then bought a 386 from a used computer store. It was much faster than the 286. I was excited, and I started studying how to build computers. I went to Swap Meets and bought computer parts, and I began to take them apart and put them back together. This became almost an obsession with me.
As the 1990s progressed, computers became more common in businesses. Networking expanded. Software evolved. The internet began changing everything. And I found myself increasingly drawn into that world.
I felt like I had missed out on the computer age, and I started to do everything I could to learn more about computing. I sold the 386 and bought myself a 486. I thought I had arrived, and I remember I had bought enough parts to build my first computer.
I remember when I finished putting it together, when I was ready to plug it into the electrical socket, my hands started to tremble; I thought it might blow up! LOL! I plugged it in, and it worked. To me, this was a great accomplishment. I was so excited!
Working With Computers, My Passion Read and Study
As I grew in knowledge began to regularly build computers as a hobby. I then started looking at Apple Computers. I was so impressed with Steve Jobs and the accomplishments that he had made in the Computer Industry. He was a truly brilliant visionary who made a tremendous impact on technology.
At work, I started becoming the unofficial “computer guy.” My coworkers would ask me to look at their systems. Clients would mention issues, and I’d find myself offering to help troubleshoot. What began as curiosity had now turned into capability.
Now, I have many computers in my home, both Windows PCs and Macs. Of course, my 27″ iMac and my MacBook Pro are my favorites. I also have an HP Victus Gaming Laptop that’s awesome. Working with computers has continued to be a big hobby for me. That’s why I can say working with computers continues to be one of my passions.

When I look back, I realize that my passion wasn’t born in a single moment. It developed gradually. It was nurtured by exposure, curiosity, hands-on experimentation, and a willingness to learn more about technology in an era when my learning required a great amount of effort.
It started in a job that seemed unrelated. It grew through observation and an idea from an unknown source. It deepened through my experience and enlightenment. And it solidified through success after many failures.
